Tjutjunaku Worka Tjuta

  TWT

Most of us take our jobs for granted, but what if it was twice as hard to get a job because of your cultural background? That’s what Indigenous Australians face every day, but Tjutjunaku Worka Tjuta Inc is making a difference in Ceduna and surrounding districts by providing a stepping stone to employment.

Tjutjunaku Worka Tjuta, which translates as ‘a place of work’, is the peak Aboriginal organisation in Ceduna. It aims to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous people in the Wangka Pulka North ward of Ceduna.

Ceduna is home to the highest percentage of Aboriginal people in all local government areas of South Australia, standing at 24% of the population.

TWT as it’s known—has the largest Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) program in the area and has been recognised on a national stage for its Indigenous employment achievements.

TWT was developed 20 years ago to deliver the CDEP program to the Ceduna area, with the aim of boosting job and training opportunities for local Indigenous community members and also because CDEP participants wanted to work for the pay they received.

It began in a single room office in 1989 with the aim of enhancing the training and employment prospects of the local Aboriginal community.

The organisation has grown over the 20 years since then to become the leading Indigenous organisation in the area.

As well as the CDEP program it now runs a number of other programs and businesses that benefit the whole community.”

TWT services and businesses include:
The Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) for Ceduna and Koonibba;
The Ceduna Arts and Culture Centre;
A Homelands Municipal Service, in which nine homelands are supported;
A Sport and Recreation Program;
The Ceduna Community Gym;
The West Coast Aboriginal Languages program;
NAIDOC activities;
A financial service for the whole of Ceduna Community;
A labour hire service
The Emu Farm accommodation and training facility.

The growth of TWT over the past 20 years has been phenomenal. These services have grown from local demand, needs were identified and services delivered to address those needs.

Our core focus is to support the social and economic wellbeing of Indigenous people and their family members by providing training and job opportunities. TWT gives its participants a high level of self-confidence, self-determination and self-management
