Uambi Aboriginal Corporation
Uambi Aboriginal Corporation has been established since 1999.
For ten years it was run as the CDEP in Gilgandra and for a short time in Coonabarabran, until it was no longer funded in 2009, as Gilgandra is not remote.
Uambi won the Orana Regional Business Excellence Award’s Regional Indigenous Business Award in 2008.
Community members in Gilgandra voiced their desire for the corporation to continue at two meetings in 2008. A dedicated governance committee, made up of local Aboriginal community members, has endeavoured to honour their wishes and to keep Uambi open through establishing a Community and Youth centre.
The aim of this centre is to become an alternative learning centre for the Gilgandra community. At present we are mowing lawns, assisting LALCs with their administrative processes, renting offices to Community service groups and auspicing the Gilgandra Aboriginal Community Working Party.
