Remote Servicing Review Consultations and Discussion Paper

In the 2011-12 Budget the Australian Government announced a review of remote participation and employment services with a view to introducing improvements from 1 July 2013.

Consultation strategy

On 29 June 2011 the government announced the consultation strategy for the review. The consultations will guide and inform the design of the new arrangements for remote participation and employment services.

The consultation schedule is available for New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia.  The schedule for the Northern Territory contains locations and dates and will be filled with the venues and times as they become available.

The Government has announced the release of a discussion paper, The Future of Remote Participation and Employment Servicing Arrangements

You are invited to make written submissions in response to the discussion paper.

 

Remote Participation and Employment Services Engagement Panel

On 15 July the Government announced the membership of the Remote Participation and Employment Services Engagement Panel. The panel will provide expert advice on effective engagement for remote communities and on the development of simpler, more integrated services.

Members of the Panel include

  • Ms Shirley McPherson – Chair, Indigenous Land Corporation
  • Mr John Berto – Chief Executive Officer, Thamarrurr Development Corporation
  • Ms Pat Brahim – General Manager, Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation
  • Mr Nolan Hunter – Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kimberley Land Council
  • Ms Suzannah Kuzio – Chief Executive Officer, Community Enterprises Australia Ltd
  • Ms Sally Sinclair – Chief Executive Officer, National Employment Services Association, and
  • Ms Melanie Stutsel – Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community Policy, Minerals Council of Australia.

Senator Mark Arbib, the Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, met with the Panel at its first meeting on 26 July 2011. He announced that Shirley McPherson would chair the Panel and briefed the members on the purpose and importance of the review. Senator Arbib thanked Ms McPherson and the other panel members for their commitment to improving participation and employment services for people in remote Australia. 

Consultation forums

The Government has also announced that consultation forums with people in remote communities, service providers, employers and other stakeholders will take place during August and September 2011.

The schedule for the consultation forums is being progressively finalised.  Locations and dates are available for New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory.  The schedule will be filled with the venues and times as they become available. 

Discussion paper

Submissions should be in Word format, and while there is no word limit you are asked that submissions be kept brief.  Submissions close at 5:00 pm (AEST) Friday 12 October 2011.
